Team Visa athlete Pat Burgener is a man who sees boundaries not as hurdles, but as an invitation to cross them creatively. Whether in the halfpipe or on the concert stage, the man from western Switzerland impresses with his versatility, his openness, and an energy that is truly infectious.

After two Olympic appearances for Switzerland, Pat Burgener is now opening a new chapter: representing Brazil, his mother’s homeland, he aims to reach for the top once again at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games. But Burgener is more than just an athlete – he is an artist, a free spirit, and a strategic trailblazer. A conversation about sporting ambitions, mental balance, and the courage to follow one’s own path.

Pat, you have a long career in snowboarding behind you, competing in the Olympic Winter Games and World Championships. After all these years, what still drives you to achieve your personal best?

PB: That’s a good question. I’m simply passionate about this sport. My ambitions are always very high. Four years ago, before the last Olympic Winter Games, I was extremely motivated and had the goal of winning an Olympic medal. I was among the top three in the world at the time – until I got injured eleven months before the Games. I had a severe knee infection, was in hospital, and was simply fighting to keep my leg.

Back then, my biggest challenge was just being able to walk again. Today, four years later, I’m healthy, fit – and more motivated than ever. I need big goals, otherwise I get bored. I took a short break after the last Games, but then I realised: I want to keep competing at the highest level. Many people have thought several times that I was retiring from snowboarding, for example when I started with music. But every time, I come back stronger.

Now I have a new goal: not just to ride for myself, but to make history. I am now competing for Brazil, and every result, every podium finish is a historic event. This responsibility gives me a motivation I’ve never felt before.

Looking ahead to the 2026 Olympic Games in Milan-Cortina – what is your personal goal?

PB: A medal would be incredible – and I believe it’s possible. At the beginning of the year, I wasn’t sure, but since changing nations, I have completely changed my structure: I have a private coach who is also one of my best friends. The training is now much more personal, more relaxed – and that’s exactly what brings out my best performance.

I was recently in Brazil for ten days, and the energy there is unbelievable. It’s fun to be there – and when I’m having fun, I ride my best. For me, the perfect goal isn’t just a podium, but a season where I have the time of my life. If I can achieve that, the results will come naturally.

You mentioned the differences between the Swiss and Brazilian structures. How do you experience that?

PB: The Swiss-Ski structure is fantastic; it was like a family to me for many years. Of course, I lose training opportunities, for example in Saas-Fee, by competing for Brazil now. But in return, I have a setup that suits me better. I travel with my friend who is there just for me – that’s a completely new feeling.

I knew I was giving up a lot by changing nations, but I’m doing it for a greater purpose. I want to make winter sports visible in Brazil, inspire children, and build a community. When 200 million people in a country with no snow suddenly have a reason to watch the Winter Games – that’s huge.

So, would it be fair to say you are an ambassador for snowboarding – for both Switzerland and Brazil?

PB: Yes, absolutely. Many people still see me as the Swiss-Brazilian that I am. I’m bringing the sport to Brazil and, at the same time, putting Switzerland on the map in this huge country. That fills me with pride. I believe that in the coming years, more Brazilians will travel to Switzerland to get to know the sport – and I’m excited to be a link between these two worlds.

You are part of Team Visa. What does that mean to you?

PB: Visa is one of the most iconic brands in the world. Even as a child, I dreamt of being part of the team. They have been with me since the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang. What’s special is that they don’t just support their brand, but also my personal journey – even my music projects. I’ve worked with many brands, but Visa really asks: What are your plans? and then supports those plans. I appreciate that very much. Together, we write the most beautiful stories because we share the same purpose.

You’re not only a snowboarder but also an internationally touring musician. How do you manage two careers at such a high level?

PB: Probably thanks to ADHD – and my passion (laughs). I’ve just played 15 shows in a row; I’m tired but fulfilled. Passion is the reason I never give up, even when things get tough. I’ve had ten serious injuries, but I’ve always come back. If you don’t love what you do, you give up after the first setback.

What is your most important message to the people who follow you?

PB: I want to show that we are all the same – with the same opportunities and the same struggles. I want to inspire others to follow their passion, no …matter what. If we were less selfish and gave more – love, passion, support – the world would be a better place.

To finish: what can your fans expect from you in the upcoming season?

PB: They can expect quite a bit – but I’m not revealing anything yet! (laughs) My coach and I have prepared something special. If everything goes to plan, it will be spectacular. So, just watch – it will be worth it.
