Nearly ten years after the remarkable comeback of Akagera National Park in eastern Rwanda — once almost destroyed by conflict and poaching, now a thriving sanctuary for the Big Five — another milestone is reshaping Africa’s safari landscape. With Wilderness Magashi Peninsula, the renowned lodge operator Wilderness Rwanda opened an exclusive safari retreat in December 2025, bringing together the finest expressions of luxury, conservation and raw wilderness.

Set on a private peninsula that extends like a finger into the shimmering waters of Lake Rwanyakazinga, the new camp rises amid Akagera’s untouched savannah, open grasslands, acacia woodlands and reed-lined wetlands — a place where silence, vast horizons and wildlife define everyday life.

What Wilderness has created here is not a conventional safari camp, but an intimate haven with just eight beds: two suites designed for couples and a private-use villa, each with its own deck and breathtaking views across the lake and surrounding landscapes. Floor-to-ceiling windows, natural materials and refined interiors inspired by local traditions create spaces that offer both exceptional comfort and an immediate connection to nature.

Yet the true allure of Magashi Peninsula lies not only in its architecture or its sense of ease, but in the way it frames the wilderness itself. At dawn, the calls of chimpanzees and more than 500 bird species fill the air, while hippos graze along the shore and, from time to time, majestic elephants make their way to the water. The surrounding plains rank among the most biodiverse areas of the park, home to lions, leopards, rhinos, buffalo and countless antelope species.

Safari experiences range from classic game drives and ranger-led walking safaris to boat excursions on the lake, where guests can observe wildlife at remarkably close range. In the evenings, visitors gather beneath the African night sky for culinary moments that artfully unite local ingredients with traditional flavours.

At the heart of the project stands not only exclusivity, but a deep respect for landscape and community. Wilderness works closely with the Rwanda Development Board and Akagera’s management to support conservation programmes, training initiatives and sustainable partnerships with neighbouring villages.

With its extraordinary setting, its emphasis on privacy and its striking design, Wilderness Magashi Peninsula sets a new benchmark for African safari tourism — an immersive, quietly powerful experience for those drawn to untamed nature and meaningful cultural encounters in one of the continent’s most fascinating national parks.
