How Studio DRIFT Transforms the Power of Wind into Art

Studio DRIFT was founded in 2007 by Dutch artists Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta. With an interdisciplinary team, the duo develops sculptural installations, kinetic objects, and performances that reinterpret natural phenomena through technology. Their work combines poetry and innovation and invites viewers to rethink the relationship between humans, space, and the environment.

In collaboration with Audi, Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta have translated the principle of wind into a poetic interplay of light, material, and sound. As visitors walk through the field of moving elements, they set waves in motion and experience first-hand how a single impulse can change an entire environment.

‘Wind is the driving force behind evolution and innovation in nature. Without movement, there is no progress,’ explain the founders of Studio DRIFT. Their installation reminds us that we ourselves are also constantly part of a dynamic system – in dialogue with our environment.

Technology, viewed from a poetic perspective

Founded in Amsterdam in 2007, Studio DRIFT has been creating works at the intersection of art, nature, and technology for almost two decades. Kinetic sculptures, drone performances, light installations – the artist duo always aims to make the hidden mechanisms of nature visible and tangible. The internationally acclaimed works are part of the collections of institutions such as the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the SFMOMA in San Francisco.

In 2017, they were named ​‘Designer of the Year’ by Dezeen magazine. But it is not just technical precision that sets their work apart. It is the quiet wonder they evoke: concerning the rhythm of life, the power of movement – and with regard to our deep, often forgotten connection to nature.

Small impulses, big impact

There is a deeper reason why movement plays such a central role in DRIFT’s work. Did Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta not feel so at home in the world of art and design, they could also imagine themselves pursuing a career in film animation. ​‘The possibility of bringing lifeless things to life really fascinates me,’ says Lonneke Gordijn. ​‘Perhaps that’s why movement plays such an important role in all our artworks.’ As in animation, DRIFT creates a powerful emotional impact through the interplay of tiny impulses – a principle that runs consistently through their work.

Movement is key

Two worlds collided at Milan Design Week 2025: with its robotic light installation entitled ​‘DRIFT Us’, Studio DRIFT transformed the inner courtyard of Portrait Milano into a living landscape – a tribute to the wind as a driving force of nature. In cooperation with Audi, a technically and conceptually coordinated field of light, sound, and movement was created. The installation illustrated how the smallest changes can set larger processes in motion.

At the same time, Audi celebrated the 30th anniversary of its Audi individualisation programme with an exclusive tuned A6 Avant in Baikal Blue and Neodymium Gold. Here, too, the focus was on the combination of technology, material aesthetics, and personal expression. The collaboration between Audi and DRIFT demonstrated how technology, design, and spatial perception can be linked – as a joint reflection on change, materiality, and impact. audi​.at
