Holidays no longer end at the hotel reception. What was once considered classic holiday wardrobe has developed into a design category of its own. Today, resortwear accompanies travellers from breakfast on the terrace to a sailing trip and on to dinner in the evening. It stands for a lifestyle in which elegance, comfort and functionality come together quite naturally.
As travel behaviour has changed, so too have the demands placed on clothing. Travel today is more fluid than it was just a few years ago. A boat trip in the morning, lunch on the beach at midday, a stroll through the old town in the afternoon and a restaurant visit in the evening — often all in a single day. Instead of changing outfits for every occasion, what is needed are garments that adapt effortlessly to different situations while appearing both refined and uncomplicated.
What was long considered a niche within fashion is increasingly developing into an independent design category. Clothing should be light, functional and yet elegant. It has to work just as well on a yacht as it does in a hotel bar or on a city stroll. The ambition is no longer to choose between activity and style, but to combine both as a matter of course. This development has not gone unnoticed in luxury hospitality. More and more hotels today no longer see themselves exclusively as places to stay overnight. They create entire worlds of living that extend far beyond the stay itself — with their own fragrances, interior collections, books or design objects. Now fashion, too, is increasingly moving into focus.
A current example is provided by One & Only Resorts together with the Italian lifestyle brand SEASE. The two companies have jointly developed an exclusive resortwear collection, available in selected One & Only resorts. The collaboration is far more than a classic brand partnership. Behind SEASE are the brothers Franco and Giacomo Loro Piana, sons of Pier Luigi Loro Piana, who shaped the development of one of Italy’s most renowned luxury companies over several decades. Their idea: to combine traditional tailoring with innovative materials and an active lifestyle.
The eleven-piece collection is aimed at men who move naturally between sailing trips, coastlines, mountains and cities. Linen, cotton, cashmere and technical performance materials meet clean lines and a colour palette developed especially for One & Only, inspired by the destinations of the resorts — from the deep blue of the Aegean to the rich green tones of Mauritius. Rather than following seasonal trends, the collection is guided by the idea of being a long-lasting companion for different travel experiences. What is remarkable here is less the collection itself than the development it represents. Luxury brands and hotels are moving ever closer together. Guests do not simply want to visit a place; they want to experience a lifestyle — and take a piece of it home with them. Resortwear thus becomes an extension of a journey that does not end with the return flight, but continues into everyday life.
This also changes the understanding of elegance. Today, it is expressed less through conspicuous logos or formal clothing than through high-quality materials, craftsmanship and garments that adapt flexibly to different situations. The boundaries between travel, leisure and everyday fashion are becoming increasingly fluid. The fact that hotels are now developing their own collections is therefore far more than a marketing idea. It shows just how much travel has changed. Luxury hotels are increasingly becoming brand worlds that extend well beyond the stay itself. Resortwear is an expression of this development — and makes visible how closely design, fashion and travel are connected today.
