From 12 October 2025 to 25 January 2026, the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen will be hosting Switzerland’s first comprehensive retrospective on Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. The museum is thus offering a rare insight into the oeuvre of an artist considered one of the most important and influential figures in contemporary art.
Over the past seven decades, Kusama (born 1929 in Matsumoto) has created an unparalleled body of work. Her famous polka dots and legendary Infinity Mirror Rooms have long since earned her cult status. In these works, reality and illusion blur as the viewer is immersed in spaces that appear as if to expand endlessly.
However, the exhibition shows much more than just the iconic installations: early works never before seen in Europe, current works, and specially produced works complement the overview of an artistic career that spans everything from painting, sculpture, and installation to literature, fashion, and performance.
A career combining the avant-garde and world fame
Kusama was already making her mark on the New York art scene in the 1960s, influencing artists such as Andy Warhol and Claes Oldenburg. Following a period of obscurity, her work was rediscovered in the 1980s, bringing her worldwide fame. Today, she is considered the world’s most successful living artist – a phenomenon that extends far beyond the art world.
An exclusive exhibition experience
The exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler is being created in close collaboration with the artist and her studio. Together with the Museum Ludwig in Cologne and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, it forms part of an international project that honours Kusama’s work at the highest level.
This offers art lovers a unique opportunity: a journey into the infinite worlds of Yayoi Kusama – right in the heart of Switzerland. Tickets for the exhibition are already available and are in high demand.
