The Schwarzenbach family, who run the hotel, are passionate art collectors who have gradually transformed the Dolder Grand in Zurich into an art gallery.
Hotels are places where people meet, and in the case of the Dolder Grand, where different eras come together. This is evident not least from the involvement of the London-based star architects Foster + Partners, who gave the traditional Zurich hotel two new wings between 2004 and 2008.
World of change
This is also reflected in the remarkable art collection, personally curated by the Schwarzenbach family of hoteliers, which is displayed in large public areas and on floors reserved exclusively for hotel guests.
Salvador Dalí’s ‘Femmes métamorphosées – Les sept arts’ greets visitors at the entrance to the restaurant, while works by Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely line the path to the spa. A distinctive Fernando Botero on the spa terrace makes a big statement about our obsession with the cult of the body.
The biggest names in Swiss and international art are represented in this hotel: in addition to Joan Miró, Max Ernst, Anselm Kiefer and Keith Haring, the Dolder Grand’s spectacular art collection includes works by local luminaries such as Max Bill and Ferdinand Hodler, as well as contemporary stars like Jani Leinonen and Takashi Murakami.
