Lanterns, street food, anime and centuries-old traditions. On 15 August 2026, the Natsu Hikari Festival transforms Halle 622 in Zurich into a small microcosm of Japan. A journey of discovery between Far Eastern culture, culinary specialities and modern pop culture.

When the heat of the day slowly subsides in Japan and thousands of paper lanterns begin to glow, the time of the Natsu Matsuri has come. Between the aromas of street kitchens, traditional music and cheerful voices, people celebrate not only summer, but also community, tradition and the beauty of fleeting moments. It is precisely this feeling of life that the Natsu Hikari Japan Festival aims to bring to the city on the Limmat on 15 August 2026.

Summer festivals are among the most important cultural events of the year in Japan. Many of them go back to traditional Shinto rituals once intended to ask for protection from illness, storms and poor harvests. Over time, these rituals developed into lively popular festivals that bring generations together today. Despite their regional differences, they are united by one common idea: keeping customs alive and celebrating togetherness.

The Natsu Hikari Japan Festival also draws on this culture. Its name already tells of the atmosphere that awaits visitors. Natsu means summer, hikari means light — fittingly, the community event sees itself as an invitation to immerse oneself for a day in the many-faceted world of Japan. And it is by no means only about ancient customs. Today, Japan fascinates like few other countries. Tea ceremonies and calligraphy stand quite naturally alongside anime and manga, artistic craftsmanship meets contemporary design, regional specialities mingle with the scent of yakitori. It is precisely this interplay of history and the present that creates the festival’s special appeal — and shapes its heart.

Those who wish to immerse themselves even more deeply in Japanese culture can take part in various workshops. Whether origami, a look behind the scenes of anime dubbing, a tea ceremony, sake tasting or a Japanese crash course — numerous hands-on activities invite visitors to get to know Japan from very different perspectives. The varied programme is complemented by martial arts, music and live performances on the Natsu Hikari Stage.

Konnichiwa. For one day, Japan moves a little closer. And perhaps sometimes a summer festival is all it takes to awaken a longing for the Land of the Rising Sun.
