When the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina open on 6 February 2026, a new chapter in Olympic history begins. For the first time, two equal hosts – Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo – share the spotlight. Between metropolitan energy and the dramatic Dolomites, the Games unfold on a stage that deliberately breaks new ground: geographically expansive, culturally diverse, and clearly shaped by sustainability and a sense of closeness.
This vision also defines the Opening Ceremony. Under the concept of the “Cerimonia Diffusa”, it will take place simultaneously in several locations: the San Siro Stadium in Milan, as well as Cortina d’Ampezzo, Livigno and Predazzo. Cutting-edge broadcast technologies connect these venues into one shared narrative. City and mountain, tradition and modernity, art and sport merge into an opening that aims to impress not through noise, but through resonance.
The artistic guiding theme, “Armonia”, chooses emotion over spectacle. Music, design and fashion – with a deliberate focus on Milan as an international capital of culture and creativity – shape the atmosphere. Even the Olympic flame follows this decentralised approach: two cauldrons, one in Milan and one in Cortina, symbolise unity across distance. This is an Opening Ceremony with conviction – and a blueprint for Winter Games that redefine themselves.
Record Delegation and Big Ambitions
Against this remarkable backdrop, the Swiss delegation begins an Olympic race filled with confidence, speed and major ambitions. With around 175 athletes, Swiss Olympic travels to northern Italy with the largest Winter delegation in its history.
In alpine skiing, expectations stretch across several disciplines where technique, precision and tactical intelligence will prove decisive. On demanding courses such as the men’s Stelvio downhill in Bormio or the women’s track in Cortina d’Ampezzo, experience, courage and consistency meet head-on. The outcome remains wide open – even if a touch of racing luck sometimes plays its part.
Ice Hockey as a Medal Opportunity – NHL Power Returns
The Olympic ice hockey tournament adds another exclamation mark. With NHL players returning, the competition gains an entirely new dimension in 2026 – and Switzerland moves closer to an Olympic medal than it has in decades.
In a short tournament where details decide everything, this combination could make the difference. Switzerland brings physical strength, tactical discipline and competitiveness in every position. A medal would not come as a sensation, but as the result of steady progress that has pushed Swiss ice hockey forward with determination. The women’s team also arrives with confidence and aims once again for precious metal.
New Disciplines and Swiss Strengths: Ski Mountaineering and Freestyle
Ski mountaineering joins the Olympic programme for the first time – and it offers Switzerland an additional opportunity. As one of the world’s leading nations in this sport, Swiss athletes enter immediately as part of the extended circle of favourites. Explosive climbs, technical descents and tactical instincts decide medals by seconds – a profile that fits the Swiss tradition perfectly.
Swiss freestyle skiing also promises spectacular moments. Creativity, courage and technical brilliance meet a stage built for explosive runs and unforgettable highlights.
All other sports – from curling and biathlon to bobsleigh or skeleton – complete the picture. Whether precision on the ice, nerves of steel on the trails, or sheer speed in the track, competitions everywhere await in which Swiss colours can play a decisive role.
In this spirit: HOPP SCHWYZ!
