Those venturing to the south of Crete will find a place above the village of Kissos that blends in with the landscape rather than standing out from it. Meraki Studios, a new development designed by Danish architect Sigurd Larsen, appears to have been carved out of the rock – geometrically clear, yet deeply rooted in the local building tradition.

A seasonal vegetable garden is currently being developed on the 6,500 m² plot surrounded by olive, fig and oak trees, which will gradually grow and flourish. Guests staying in the six holiday apartments are encouraged to help themselves to whatever produce is in season.

The architectural language: a filigree 3D concrete skeleton, infilled with local natural stone to ensure a pleasant indoor climate. The design has been radically reduced – not for the sake of design, but out of conviction. What counts here is not the spectacular, but the harmonious.

Each unit has its own terrace with sweeping views of the valley or the nearby mountain landscape, a kitchenette and an invitation to relax: no excess of luxury, but the ideal amount of comfort needed to slow down and settle in.

Those who wish to can explore the surrounding area can head to the village of Spili with its taverns and markets, the south coast or the nearby Psiloritis National Park. Or simply stay where you are.

As hosts Jan and Vanessa say: We wanted to create a place where guests can escape everyday life and connect with nature – without sacrificing comfort or independence.”
