Hilton Istanbul Bosphorus

Strictly speaking, the Hilton Istanbul Bosphorus does not belong in the category of new openings. Yet after an extensive redesign that has touched every area of the property, the return of this hotel icon feels almost like one. Since its opening in 1955, the hotel has shaped the Bosphorus and the history of international hospitality in Turkey. Now, a new chapter begins for one of the country’s best-known hotels.

The Hilton Istanbul Bosphorus was Turkey’s first international luxury hotel and, at the same time, the first Hilton hotel outside the American continent. It was designed by the renowned architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill together with Turkish architect Sedad Hakkı Eldem. Over the decades, the hotel developed into a social hub of the city and hosted heads of state, artists, film stars and international guests from around the world.

The renovation focused not on reinvention, but on the careful evolution of the property. Istanbul-based design studio Autoban reinterpreted the architecture of the 1950s and combined its modernist clarity with references to Turkish craftsmanship, art and culture. Numerous historic elements were preserved, including the striking entrance canopy, the iconic outdoor pool and the handmade Çintemani tiles that have been part of the hotel’s visual identity for decades.

The 475 rooms and suites have also been completely redesigned. Natural materials such as wood, marble, leather and metal define the new interiors, while the colour palette picks up on the changing light moods of the Bosphorus. Large windows, balconies and terraces open up views of the waterway, Istanbul’s skyline and the hotel’s expansive gardens.

Gastronomy will play a particularly important role in the future. With several new restaurants and bars, the hotel reconnects with its role as a social meeting place in the city. The offering ranges from the modern Turkish restaurant Malva and the lobby brasserie Lalou to Sazzou, with jazz, vinyl and cocktails — deliberately reaching beyond the conventions of classic hotel operations.

Despite all the innovations, the Hilton Istanbul Bosphorus remains above all one thing: a piece of hotel history. The comprehensive renovation shows how an icon of post-war modernism can be carefully translated into the present without losing its character. More than seventy years after its opening, the hotel therefore continues to rank among the defining addresses on the Bosphorus.
