The Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois in Basel surprises with an extension by Herzog & de Meuron – a tribute to history, the present and hospitality.

Between grandeur and modernity, the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois is opening up new perspectives with the redesign of the listed front building on the Schifflände. Over a period of two years, the corner building, which was built in 1903, was transformed in dialogue with its history – now it presents itself as an architectural statement by Herzog & de Meuron: inspired by French classicism, imbued with contemporary elegance.

Inside, guests are greeted by a finely tuned dramaturgy of colour, texture and light. Custom-made furniture, velvety red alcoves, shimmering ceilings – each floor tells a different story. Particularly impressive is the 240-square-metre Suite des Rois with its private gym and views of the Rhine and old town. The junior suites also make a clear statement – sensual, bold and individual.

New spaces such as the convertible Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar ensemble and the BANKS restaurant, which is set to open in autumn, bring urban energy to the hotel, while the purist Seijaku spa with clay, wood and panoramic views provides a tranquil counterpoint.

Young at heart, rich in history’ – that is the credo of the hotel. The new building embodies this in every detail: with poise, sensitivity and an understanding of luxury that seeks to touch rather than impress.
