As the Grisons Alps pass by outside, a journey for all senses unfolds in the Gourmino dining car of the Rhaetian Railway — featuring fine cuisine and carefully selected gins.

Chur on an early evening. The platform buzzes with familiar restlessness: rolling suitcases, commuters, one last glance at a smartphone. But a few carriages further down, the atmosphere shifts entirely. Here, you don’t just board — you begin an evening that takes its time. Inside the elegant Gourmino dining car, everything is set for a special culinary journey of around three hours: beautifully laid tables, glasses shimmering in warm light. Outside, the train begins its ascent towards Arosa. The city drifts past — rows of houses, streets, traffic.

A travelling salon of indulgence

Beyond the striking panorama, the focus of the evening is clear: gin. Shortly after Chur disappears in the glow of the evening sun, the culinary experience begins with a classic yet refined gin and tonic. The special twist: your table remains the same, but everything else changes. As the first of three courses is served — each incorporating gin in subtle, surprising ways — the train climbs higher into the mountains. Curve after curve, the view opens up, the valley recedes, and the landscape grows quieter.

The gin boom in Switzerland

Not long ago, the selection of gins was — put mildly — limited. Today, the variety is remarkable. Over the past ten to fifteen years, gin has experienced a true boom in Switzerland, leading to a rapidly growing number of producers and products. This development is clearly part of a broader trend. Consumers are increasingly drawn to handcrafted products, regional ingredients and distinctive flavour profiles. Juniper remains the foundation, but beyond that the spectrum ranges from herbs and berries to exotic spices. At the same time, gin’s success lies in its versatility. Hardly any other spirit offers such a wide range of aromas. Once merely a component of simple long drinks, gin has evolved into a lifestyle product and is now an integral part of modern culinary culture.

But back to the gin dinner: with the final bite of dessert, Chur already comes back into view. What remains is the memory of creative gin compositions — and of an excursion that was far more than just a train journey. The perfect evening for anyone who loves railway romance, nature and refined flavours.
