Am 27. September 2025 eröffnet in der mexikanischen Hauptstadt ein neues Museum, um das Leben und Schaffen von Frida Kahlo aus einer bis dato kaum beleuchteten Perspektive zu entdecken.
The Museo Casa Kahlo is set to open in Mexico City, just yards away from the world-famous Casa Azul. While the previous museum focused primarily on the relationship between Kahlo and her husband Diego Rivera, the new museum in the Casa Roja is dedicated to her early life, her artistic development, and the family environment that shaped her.
The Casa Roja – once purchased by Kahlo’s parents and later passed on to Frida and her sisters – was donated to the museum by her great-niece and estate administrator Mara Romeo Kahlo. ‘Frida’s legacy belongs to the world, but it begins here – on this soil, in these houses, in the culture that shaped her,’ explains Kahlo. The new museum will not only preserve memories but will also tell new stories, reveal previously unknown facets, and provide space for new voices.
The Museo Casa Kahlo will be directed by Adán García Fajardo, currently director of the Museum of Memory and Tolerance in Mexico City. The New York-based Fundación Kahlo will sponsor the museum and will also pursue an ambitious cultural programme. Among other projects, it plans to launch the Kahlo Art Prize, a biennial award for visionary contemporary artists, and Las Ayudas, a programme dedicated to supporting Mexican, indigenous, and Latin American art and culture.
The new museum will not only consolidate Frida Kahlo’s legacy, but will also retell her story – in keeping with the spirit of an artist who never stopped questioning herself, reinventing herself, and transforming her innermost feelings into art.
