Switzerland is currently experiencing a real football fairytale! The 2025 Women’s European Football Championship has sparked a wave of enthusiasm that is not only filling the stadiums but captivating the entire nation. A preview of the quarter-final.
It’s a summer that will go down in history thanks to packed stadiums, an electrifying atmosphere and the Swiss national team fighting with heart and passion on the pitch. The start of the tournament did not exactly go according to plan for us. In the opening match against Norway in Basel, we suffered a 2 – 1 defeat despite a strong first half in which we took the lead with a goal from Nadine Riesen. But the rousing atmosphere in the sold-out St. Jakob-Park, where 34,063 spectators set a new record for a Swiss women’s national team match, showed us all the enormous potential of this tournament.
In the second group match against Iceland in Bern, we finally broke the deadlock with a hard-fought 2 – 0 victory. Géraldine Reuteler and Alayah Pilgrim displayed nerves of steel to score the decisive goals, bringing us our first win at this home European Championship – a moment of pure joy and relief for the whole country.
The third group match against Finland in Geneva was a crucial game that turned into a dramatic thriller. After falling behind, we were on the brink of elimination, but Riola Xhemaili saved us all from elimination with an added-time equaliser that made it 1 – 1 and secured a historic first appearance in the European Championship quarter-finals. The celebrations in Geneva and across the country were spectacular – a festival of football that will live long in the memory.
Euphoria throughout the country
The euphoria in Switzerland knows no bounds. Our women’s national team’s matches are not only attracting record TV audiences, they are generating enthusiasm on the streets that unites us all. Thousands of fans are flocking to the stadiums, and the buzz around women’s football has reached a whole new level. Even the president of the Swiss Football Association (SFV), Dominique Blanc, has spoken of a “summer fairytale” and a “euphoria that exceeds all expectations”. We are proud of our players – they are our pride and joy, they are our team.
Quarter-final preview
A big challenge awaits us in the quarter-finals on Friday 18 July 2025. At 9pm, the Swiss national team will face reigning world champions Spain at the Wankdorf Stadium in Bern. The Spanish women have dominated the group stage with three wins and are the favourites for the title. But our ‘Nati’ has already shown that it can achieve anything – and with our support, they will give it their best shot.
Go Nati!
Our team has inspired us with their tireless dedication and passion to get this far. Now we need to get behind them again and cheer them on to the semi-finals. The dream lives on, and we are proud of every player who is making this European Championship an unforgettable experience. Go Nati – for us, for Switzerland, for victory!
