When stars fall from the sky, astronomers rejoice. When they land on our plates, however, they bring joy to the hearts of gourmets.

Austria is shining in culinary splendour this year, as the new MICHELIN Guide puts Austrian gastronomy on the international gourmet map with an impressive 82 starred restaurants, 43 Bib Gourmands and 33 Green Stars.

Crowning glory in the city park: Steirereck reaches the top

The highlight of this selection? A new 3‑star restaurant that will delight the palates of foodies. The Viennese Steirereck in the Stadtpark, under Heinz Reitbauer and head chef Michael Bauböck, has now officially arrived in the top league – alongside the previous star-holder Juan Amador, who continues to lead the way, but this time with a second restaurant.

But the second three-star restaurant, the Steirereck, is particularly special. With cuisine that masterfully combines tradition and innovation, the Steirereck proves that luxury does not always have to mean caviar and lobster. The simple dish of‘veal lights with chive dumplings and marjoram’ impressed the MICHELIN inspectors just as much as the subtle dishes with regional charm.

This is not just food, it’s art on a plate,’ says Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the MICHELIN Guides. And to top it all off, René Antrag’s excellent wine pairings round off every visit.

13 two-star restaurants: creativity in the mountains and cities

The MICHELIN Guide in Austria has now awarded two stars to a remarkable 13 restaurants, in addition to the five establishments already listed. Among them is the Stüva restaurant in Ischgl in Tyrol (TIR), where patron and head chef Benjamin Parth impresses with his menu of absolutely outstanding product quality and creativity.

Also worthy of mention is the small Ois restaurant at the remote Mühltalhof hotel in Neufelden, where Philip Rachinger creates top cuisine with many a surprise effect. Equally outstanding is the self-confident modern cuisine that Johannes Nuding now serves up at the Schwarzer Adler in Hall in Tyrol after returning from the international gastronomy scene to his Austrian homeland.

Top-notch cuisine is also served at the tastefully Alpine Griggeler Stuba in the‘Burg Vital Resort’ in Lech am Arlberg, where head chef Sebastian Jakob is responsible for a creative menu with skilfully integrated Japanese accents. Also worthy of mention is a classic par excellence: the Restaurant Obauer in Werfen (SBG). Here, brothers Karl and Rudolf Obauer uphold the values of their traditional family business in a classic, but by no means outdated way.

In terms of philosophy and style, the Kräuterreich by Vitus Winkler in Sankt Veit im Pongau (SBG) offers a complete contrast to this, yet with equally high recognition value. In addition to two MICHELIN stars, the restaurant has also been awarded the Green Star for its sustainable philosophy.

Newly represented in Vienna and awarded two stars straight away is the Restaurant Doubek, where patron Stefan Doubek ensures a very special experience with his unique fire concept. Here you will be taken on an exciting and well-thought-out journey that will definitely stay with you. The following Viennese restaurants also managed to retain their two stars: Silvio Nickol Gourmet Restaurant, Mraz & Sohn and Konstantin Filippou.

A shooting star for every taste

The 53 new one-star restaurants range from the culinary offerings of RAU nature-based cuisine in Großraming, where owner and head chef Klemens Gold impresses with his very own‘10 seasons’ concept, to the Asian-inspired creativity at Esslokal in Hadersdorf am Kamp.

In Vienna, three more restaurants have been awarded a star in addition to the five already recommended one-star restaurants – TIAN, Edvard, APRON, [aend] and Pramerl & the Wolf: these include Esszimmer – Everybody’s Darling with the young modern concept of Alexander Kumptner, the stylish restaurant Herzig with the precise modern cuisine of Sören Herzig, and the Z’SOM, where patron Diego Br conjures up the flavours of his native South America on diners’ plates, while his wife, who is in charge of service, exudes Tyrolean charm. This goes to show that culinary enjoyment need not be elitist, but can be experienced everywhere – in big cities as well as in hidden valleys.

Green stars: sustainability tastes good

The 33 awarded restaurants with Green Stars prove that good food can also be good for the environment. Whether it’s the Dreikanthof Am Mahrbach in Königsdorf or the charming Wirtshaus Steirereck am Pogusch, the restaurateurs impressively show how sustainability is not just a trend, but an attitude.

Excellent accents: the Special Awards

The culinary magic of the stars is rounded off by the presentation of special awards. Barbara Eselböck from the Taubenkobel was honoured as Host of the Year, while the young Julian Stieger in Lech has been thrilling diners with his visionary cuisine at Chef’s Table with the‘Young Chef Award’. And Alexander Koblinger, one of Austria’s few Master Sommeliers, ensures true culinary explosions with his wine knowledge in Golling an der Salzach.

Conclusion: a feast for all the senses

In 2025, Austria finally established itself as a world-class gourmet destination. The new MICHELIN Guide not only shows how good Austrian food tastes, but also that top cuisine can be found everywhere – whether in the Alps, by lakes or in vibrant cities. A culinary journey not to be missed.
