Hydra Dance Days 2026: The Art of Encounter

Anyone arriving on Hydra quickly realizes that the island functions differently from many of its neighbours in the Aegean. There are no cars. People move on foot through narrow alleys, past natural-stone houses, small squares and the busy harbour. For decades, the island has attracted artists, writers and creatives. Since 2024, the Hydra Dance Days have added a dance festival to this landscape — one that fits this special place remarkably well.

The festival was founded by choreographer and artistic director Michaela Meschke and visual artist Jacqueline Savidge. Their approach consciously differs from that of many established festivals. The focus is not on big names or elaborate productions, but on encounters — between artists and audiences, between international guests and the island community, and between professional dancers and people who have previously had little contact with contemporary dance.

The Hydra Dance Days do not understand dance exclusively as a stage art. Workshops and collaborative projects enable residents of the island to actively participate in the festival. Children, young people and adults are given the opportunity to meet artists, dance themselves and, in some cases, even perform together with the professionals. This creates an atmosphere that feels more like cultural togetherness than a conventional festival operation. Another focus lies on site-specific works. The invited artists develop projects created especially for Hydra, engaging with the island, its spaces and its distinctive atmosphere. As a result, dance does not take place only on stage, but becomes part of the public space.

From 4 to 9 July 2026, the festival will once again bring together Greek and international artists on Hydra. Invited guests include French choreographer Christine Bastin with her Compagnie La Folia, Sigurd Blystad from the Norwegian National Ballet, Danae & Dionysios from Greece, the Efi Farmaki Dance Company, South African-German dancer Alice Kok and the Swedish company Moveo.

The performances are spread across various locations on the island and will take place, among other venues, at the open-air Hydrama Theatre in Vlichos. The opening event will take place on 5 July 2026 at Hydrogoios, before the festival concludes on 9 July with a major performance evening at the Hydrama Theatre.

Hydra Dance Days is still young. Perhaps that is precisely where its appeal lies. Instead of aiming for scale, the festival focuses on proximity, exchange and the connection between art and everyday life. On an island that has always attracted people in search of inspiration, this seems an entirely fitting approach.
