Marathi, Crete – On a sun-drenched hill overlooking the azure-blue sparkle of the Aegean Sea, a new icon of luxury travel has been added to Crete’s natural landscape: The JW Marriott Crete Resort & Spa, the first JW Marriott beach resort in the Mediterranean, opened its doors on 12 June 2025, sending a powerful signal to a new generation of discerning travellers.
What Marriott International has created in the Cretan Bay of Marathi is no ordinary resort. It is a carefully curated retreat that redefines the island’s lifestyle with architectural elegance, culinary sophistication and attentive hospitality. Spanning more than 40 hectares, the property blends into a landscape reminiscent of a picture-perfect dream: olive groves, carob trees, wild thyme bushes – all set to the sound of the lapping waves.
‘With the JW Marriott Crete Resort & Spa, we are not only celebrating a debut, but also setting the tone for a new way of travelling: slower, more connected, more rooted,’ explains Helen Leighton, Vice President of Luxury Brands for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Marriott International. Her smile is calm but determined as she adds: ‘This hotel is designed to touch the soul.’
The architecture: harmony between nature and design
Designed by renowned Athens-based architectural firm Block722, the resort rises up like a modern Acropolis, but without false sentimentality – instead , the building boasts a simple elegance that does not impose itself on the eye, but rather draws you into a warm embrace. The materials used read like a tribute to the island itself: marble, cedar wood, limestone. Planted roof terraces, organic lines, large windows that let in sunlight and frame the Aegean Sea like a painting.
160 rooms, suites and villas are spread out across the grounds in terraces, many featuring private pools and all offering a singular promise: the luxury of simplicity. The colour palette inside is reminiscent of Mediterranean earthy tones: terracotta, sand, olive green. Handcrafted ceramics and sculptural lighting fixtures reference traditional Cretan forms, without falling into folklore. It is the art of understatement that triumphs here.
Sustainability as a philosophy
The JW Marriott Crete Resort & Spa is not only a place of comfort, but also a commitment to responsibility. Geothermal systems, solar panels, wastewater recycling for garden irrigation – the list of sustainable technologies deployed is lengthy. The goal: a hotel that not only lives in, but with its environment. ‘It’s about giving and taking in balance,’ comments one project manager during a tour.
Cuisine as a reflection of the landscape
Six restaurants celebrate the diversity of Cretan and Mediterranean cuisine. At the centre is the JW Garden, where chef Manolis Papoutsakis harvests fresh herbs, vegetables and wild plants on a daily basis. ‘Nature is our most important supplier,’ he says, rubbing a handful of caper buds between his fingers. The flagship restaurant, ANOEE, serves Cretan haute cuisine cooked over an open fire. The sea-to-table concept at ‘Õnalos’ brings the treasures of the Aegean Sea directly from the boat to the plate. Those who prefer Italian cuisine will find a rustic interpretation with a Mediterranean twist at Cuccagna. And at Fayi, diners can share, laugh and celebrate in the best Greek tradition.
The Eēxis bar, developed in collaboration with Line Athens, one of the 50 best bars in the world, mixes cocktails made using Cretan wild herbs, local wines and international flavours. And then there is Europe’s first JW Market: a place where design, cuisine and sustainability come together in elegant symbiosis.
Wellness reimagined
At the heart of the resort is the ANOSEAS spa – a name that is as mysterious as the atmosphere within. Inspired by ancient healing traditions and modern forms of therapy, it offers everything from aromatherapy to thalassotherapy. A yoga deck, four infinity pools, a state-of-the-art gym and treatment rooms with views of the open sea: here, well-being is not merely an option, but an invitation.
For families, the resort offers the ‘Phestos Den’ kids’ club, run by Worldwide Kids. Creativity, culture and nature are taught in a child-friendly way, whether it’s crafting with shells or planting your own mini vegetable garden.
The luxury of authenticity
It is the details that set the JW Marriott Crete Resort & Spa apart from others: the chirping of cicadas in the afternoon, the smiles of the staff, the sound of the waves rippling right up to the bedrooms. The resort is not a noisy temple of consumerism, but a quiet place to encounter yourself, nature and other people. The sunset over Marathi is spectacular. Yet, perhaps it is the silence that follows that lingers in the memory. A silence that is not empty, but full. Full of ideas, impressions and feelings.
Welcome to a new dimension in hospitality. Welcome to the JW Marriott Crete Resort & Spa.
