How did the watch industry in Glashütte influence the history of precise timepieces? How do watches shape our lives? And why do we still need a wristwatch in the age of mobile phones and smart devices? The German Watch Museum in Glashütte answers these questions.
Located to the south of Dresden, the small town of Glashütte has been an important centre of the German art of watchmaking for more than 175 years and is also one of the most exciting sites in German economic history. In the German Watch Museum Glashütte, the permanent exhibition entitled “Faszination Zeit – Zeit erleben” (‘Fascination with Time – Experiencing Time’) provides multimedia-based insight into the eventful history of the Glashütte watchmaking industry from 1845 to the present day.
A journey through time
In addition, aspects such as the sense of time and time measurement are included. The journey through the decades is interrupted by various thematic periods that provide a useful framework for the exhibition. Further highlights include the microcosm of a mechanical watch and the walk-in encyclopaedia, which explains numerous terms from the world of watches.
