As creative director at Fatboy, Pauline Barendregt plays a major role in shaping the vision of the colourful and playful Dutch furniture brand.

In our chat, she reveals what inspires her – from the little things in everyday life to her house by the sea.

Inspiration in everyday life

I often find inspiration in everyday things and a change of perspective. For example, when I found an old-fashioned oil lamp kike my grandmother used to own, a large outdoor fire immediately appeared in my mind’s eye. As a result, we developed the Flamtastique bioethanol fireplace. I like to play with proportions and give a new or different functionality to objects with which we are all familiar.’

In the style of Wes Anderson

Wes Anderson’s films are often whimsical with a sophisticated edge, which is in keeping with Fatboy’s philosophy of making people smile. The unique style is both retro and modern. Our Jolly Trolley, for example, would fit right in with Anderson’s Grand Budapest Hotel. The trolley has the same whimsical, functional charm for which Anderson’s sets are known, combining style with practicality in a way that is both fun and clever.’

There’s always room for more

One of my favourite places to get inspired is my little beach house by the sea. Gazing at the clouds helps me clear my mind to come up with new design ideas for products that feel familiar and recognisable, but yet are completely new at the same time.’
