The GERSTL Family Retreat: A New Designer Hotel for Families in South Tyrol

Overlooking Lake Resia, Marion and Lukas Gerstl have created a new refuge – close to nature, design-focused, and family-friendly. Boasting both a 76-metre water slide and an infinity pool with lake views, a new dream destination awaits fans of South Tyrol, whatever their age.

The bell tower of Old Curon rises from the turquoise waters of Lake Resia like a silent landmark – an image that has long fascinated visitors to South Tyrol, symbolising the magic of this borderland combining mountains, water, and sky. Just a few steps from the shoreline, hosts Marion and Lukas Gerstl have made a long-held dream come true: having previously established DAS GERSTL Alpine Retreat in Mals, they opened DAS GERSTL Family Retreat in May – a haven that confidently combines refined design with warm family hospitality.

The retreat was built using regional resources: plenty of wood, abundant natural light, and open space. The 65 suites and studios are true front-row seats with lake views – generously dimensioned, featuring warm natural tones, exposed wood structures, refined textures, and understated elegance. This is a hotel where sustainability isn’t just a buzzword, but rather philosophy that is put into practice: from resource-conscious construction using local partners to the in-house line of natural cosmetics used in the spa.

The culinary offerings also remain true to the region. Head Chef Petra Patscheider reimagines South Tyrolean cuisine in a light, contemporary style – using ingredients sourced within a 30-kilometre radius where possible. In the ​“Genussmarkt” (Gourmet Market), fine dining meets relaxed ambience: live cooking, artisan breads, and homemade juices. The food is known by name, and the producers often personally, too.

This is clearly not just a place for grown-ups, as indicated by the Aqua Fun Park – complete with a 76-metre slide, climbing wall, and spacious indoor and outdoor play areas. While the children let off steam, parents can unwind in the adults-only area featuring an infinity pool, panoramic saunas, and sweeping views of the lake and its storied surroundings – a place of quiet beauty that leaves a lasting impression.
