Between the cobblestones of the Old City and winding forest paths, one of Europe’s most beautiful running events is about to unfold. On May 9, 2026, as Bern transforms into a running mecca, goosebumps and athletic challenge will collide.
The capital is in a state of excitement for a true classic: one day, three races, thousands of stories. When countless colorful running shoes stream through the alleys this May, the time has come once again. The Grand Prix of Bern will turn the federal city into a vibrant stage for the 44th time. On May 9, 2026, sporting ambition will once again meet a festival atmosphere, giving the event its unmistakable energy. But what makes this Grand Prix so special? It is the combination of a spectacular backdrop and a demanding course. Passing historic landmarks, through the UNESCO-protected Old City, and into lush green sections like the Dählhölzli Forest, participants experience a route unlike any other. At the same time, the profile — with its elevations — challenges even seasoned runners, most notably the legendary ascent of the Aargauerstalden with its biting 9% incline.
From Elite to Next Gen: A Grand Prix for Everyone
At the heart of the event is the Original Grand Prix (16.093 km), considered the athletic highlight and attracting ambitious amateurs and international top-tier athletes alike. With last year’s winner and course record holder Geoffrey Kamworor, alongside Dominic Lobalu, Dominik Rolli, and Matthias Kyburz, the elite field is once again exceptionally strong. In the women’s race, Oria Liaci and Fabienne Vonlanthen are among the favorites. Those who prefer a shorter, more urban experience will find the Altstadt Grand Prix (4.7 km) a popular alternative close to the crowds. For families and young talents, the Bären Grand Prix (1.6 km) offers the ideal entry point — focusing on the joy of movement and shared experience on a flat, manageable course. Notably, this category carries the “Unified” label from Swiss Inclusive Sport. A special Swiss premiere will take place on Friday, May 8, 2026: the Coca-Cola Inclusion Run, where people with and without disabilities will send a signal for inclusion by tackling a 1.3 km course together — without the pressure of the clock, but with plenty of joy in sporting togetherness.
The Grand Prix Bern has long been more than just a race. It is a social event where the city shows its most spirited side. Spectators line the streets, bands provide the soundtrack, and the excitement is palpable at every corner. In 2026, the recipe for success remains unchanged: an event that bridges elite and popular sports, evokes deep emotions, and brings people together. Or to put it simply: a runner’s delight and a day that will be talked about for months to come.
