Freestyle, green style, lifestyle – the family-friendly rocksresort in Laax combines urban living and nature, together with a sustainable approach to the environment.

It is a sunny and mild autumn day, a young woman is patiently pushing her young daughter’s tricycle along the small path, two young people are sitting at a table working on their laptops, while next door the Piazza – cafedeli is a hive of activity. A normal everyday situation? Yes, actually, and yet the rocksresort at the LAAX Murschetg valley station is a very special place that makes a clear visual statement. Thirteen cube-shaped buildings made of solid Valser Quartzite, grouped around a central square like boulders that have been left lying around by chance, immediately signal that the holiday destination in Surselva, Grisons is anything but conventional. The cube concept by Domenig Architekten from Chur is inspired by the massive Flims landslide that occurred around 10,000 years ago, when 13 cubic kilometres of limestone rock crashed down into the depths, forming the area of today’s Flims Laax destination.

A village within a village

Everything under one roof’ was the guiding principle of the business model presented by Reto Gurtner, President and CEO of the Weisse Arena Group, when he introduced the rocksresort, which opened in 2009. The idea was that guests should be able to enjoy their stay without having to get in the car or on a bus every time they wanted to do something. In short, everything in one place: accommodation, food, sports activities and adventure. The resort, which consists of 248 apartments of various sizes, offers everything guests need for a comfortable, easy-going stay in a cosy village-like setting: a variety of restaurants, bars, shops, a hair salon, a bakery and a small grocery store. And because the resort is specially designed for families, parents can check in to the rocksresort feeling relaxed. A crèche and free childcare in the evenings promise quiet moments for couples.

Freestyle – winter fun and surf vibes

Ski-in, ski-out: the LAAX gondola is right on the doorstep of the rocksresort, taking guests directly to the winter paradise of Crap Sogn Gion. For snowboarding enthusiasts, this is the freestyle mecca of the Alps. 224 kilometres of slopes, five unique snow parks, the largest halfpipe in the world and 29 lifts guarantee fun and action. Away from the slopes, cross-country ski trails, toboggan runs, ice rinks and scenic winter or snowshoe hikes offer plenty of variety.

When the skis and snowboards are stowed away and spring arrives, sports enthusiasts and those wanting to try something new will find endless leisure opportunities at the rocksresort PARK. Whether the Mini Ramp, Urban Surfwave or Pump Track, you can surf the waves with your skateboard, scooter or BMX bike. Other highlights include the Ninja Park, the multi-sports pitch for basketball or football, the Freestyle Academy and the bike trails.

Dragon Trail

And then there is the Senda dil Dragun’, the longest treetop walkway in the world. The 1.56 kilometre-long walkway, which connects the two districts of Laax Murschetg and Laax Dorf, offers an interactive and unique nature experience in summer and winter with a slide, five adventure locations on a tower, four platforms with seating and five marble run installations.

Green style – leading the way in sustainability

Sustainability has been a top priority at the rocksresort from the very beginning. All 13 boulders’ are Minergie certified buildings and meet the highest energy efficiency standards, while the electricity comes from regional hydropower. It therefore goes without saying that regional and seasonal products are used in the kitchens. Local products are fresher and help tackle climate change. True to the motto of always giving something back to nature when something is taken from it, a paradise was created for wild bees (Apidae) right next to the asphalt Pump Track and the Snake Run. In their habitat, the critically endangered, mostly solitary insects can pursue their favourite pastime undisturbed: collecting nectar from delicate mountain flowers. Anyone who is afraid of bee stings or allergic reactions need not worry as wild bees do not sting.
