Hardly any other advanced civilisation has inspired artists, designers and jewellers over so many centuries as Ancient Egypt. Its monuments, symbols and myths continue to exert a fascination that extends far beyond archaeology. It is precisely this enduring influence that Van Cleef & Arpels has dedicated its new haute joaillerie collection to – thereby telling a story that goes far beyond that of precious gemstones.

Enthusiasm for Egypt is by no means a phenomenon of our time. The Romans, too, had obelisks brought to Rome and incorporated Egyptian motifs into their architecture and art. This fascination reached a new peak in the early 19th century with Napoleon’s Egyptian expedition, whose scientific documentation had a lasting impact on Europe. When Jean-François Champollion deciphered the hieroglyphs in 1822 and Howard Carter discovered Tutankhamun’s tomb a hundred years later, a veritable wave of Egyptomania ensued. Architecture, fashion, design and jewellery drew on the visual language of Ancient Egypt and reinterpreted it for a new era. Art Deco, in particular, transformed lotus blossoms, scarabs and geometric ornaments into symbols of a modern design language, the influence of which can still be felt today.

It is precisely at this intersection between history and the present that Van Cleef & Arpels finds its inspiration for its new haute joaillerie collection. The Maison is less interested in historical reconstructions than in the timeless imagery that has inspired artists for centuries. Rather than copying ancient jewellery, it creates original compositions that reinterpret the motifs, colours and materials of Ancient Egypt and translate them into the language of contemporary haute joaillerie.

The collection is conceived as a journey along the Nile. Deep blue lapis lazuli evokes the night sky over the desert, whilst intense turquoise recalls the river’s waters; emeralds, onyx and warm, shimmering yellow gold, meanwhile, echo the colour palette that characterised ancient Egyptian artworks. Time and again, the viewer encounters lotus blossoms, papyrus, falcons, scarabs and stylised sun discs – motifs that have symbolised protection, renewal and life for millennia. However, they do not appear as historical references, but as modern design elements with a remarkable relevance to the present day.

This approach is particularly striking in the intricately crafted necklaces, brooches and bracelets. Some are reminiscent of the monumental clarity of ancient Egyptian temples, whilst others draw on the elegance of nature, transforming plants or animals into sculptural pieces of jewellery. Characteristic of Van Cleef & Arpels is the lightness of these compositions. Despite their opulent gemstones, many creations appear almost to float, as moving elements constantly reflect the light in new ways, bringing the jewellery to life with every movement.

Behind every single creation lies an extraordinary amount of craftsmanship. Goldsmiths, gem-setters, engravers and gem cutters often spend months working on a single piece of jewellery. Gemstones are not selected solely on the basis of size or rarity, but above all for their colour, transparency and the effect they create within the overall composition. Every setting, every engraving and every transition between gold and gemstone is created with meticulous craftsmanship. It is precisely this attention to detail that defines haute joaillerie: its significance is not determined by material value alone, but by the ability to unite craftsmanship, creative vision and cultural inspiration into a single whole.

Perhaps this is precisely the secret behind the enduring fascination with Ancient Egypt. Every era rediscovers this culture in its own way. What were once temples, hieroglyphs and monumental sculptures are now transformed into architecture, design, fashion or jewellery. With its new collection, Van Cleef & Arpels impressively demonstrates that inspiration is not a matter of time. Some ideas endure for millennia – and it is precisely for this reason that they appear astonishingly modern.
